The Topkapi Palace is a popular highlight of those staying at hotels in Turkey. The palace was built as a home for Mehmet II between 1459 and 1465. The massive residence also served as a seat of government and had a school within the grounds to train civil servants and soldiers in public office. Priceless porcelains from the east and treasures from four Chinese dynasties spanning seven centuries can be found amongst the artefacts on offer.
The great wealth built up in an Empire that stretched from Arabia into North Africa and deep into the Balkans is on extravagant display in the Turkish capital. The Imperial architect, Mehmet Aga, designed Istanbul’s most spectacular building, the blue mosque and was the Ottoman’s answer to Sir Christopher Wren
Most of the sites in Bodrum are the remains of classical Greek civilisation and include such wonders as the ruins of the great mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Turkey’s capital, Istanbul is perhaps the best place to visit if you’ve got an interest that arrived in Turkey during the later centuries. In the capital holidaymakers who have managed to book cheap hotels in the city centre will be very close to the best artefacts and architecture from Turkey’s time under Ottoman rule.
Whichever part of Turkey holidaymakers choose to visit there are a number of experiences that are available, ranging from the historical to more classic beach holidays. Like the Greek Islands and mainland coast Turkey is full of well frequented resorts catering for northern Europeans looking for some sunshine. Most choose to stay in the Turkey hotels around Bodrum in the Aegean and further south in Antalya, Mediterranean Turkeys top resort. Holidaymakers staying in Bodrum are well placed to see some interesting sites based around Hierapolis and neighbouring towns.

Athens is considered to be the home of many of the top classical sites and also a wide range of excellent Greece hotels and restaurants. Travellers visiting Athens and looking for something novel to do after visiting the ancient sites can go for a meal in Archaion Gefsis (Ancient flavours) to see how the ancients ate. Delicacies on offer include wild boar, and the waiting staff walk around the restaurant in togas giving it more of a theme park feel at times.
Despite the decorative novelty that includes columns and ambient torches, diners stand to have a truly tasty and memorable experience. Cyprus hotels are good for those who would prefer the feel of an island holiday while still being able to see some ancient historical sites. According to Greek legend the island was the birthplace of the goddess Aphrodite and thus has a number of sites relating to the myth. The ancient city of Palea Paphos is an important archaeological site that contains both Roman and Hellenic ruins ranging from houses to the hilltop temple built in honour of Aphrodite. While children play in the waterparks adults can try to recapture their youth by taking a dip into the baths of Aphrodite to see if they do in fact confer eternal youth on bathers.
Holidaymakers who have a passion for all things historical, and who love to spend their time in Europe will be well occupied when visiting Greece or Turkey hotels. Of the two countries Greece is better known for having a large number of historical sites on the mainland and on the islands. However Turkey should not be overlooked because of its proximity to Greece which has left the country with many, many sites. The top sites range from Ephesus to Halicarnassus, the home of one of the spectacular seven wonders of the ancient world.
