(4.4.11) Police have found three more sets of human remains along a stretch of isolated beach on Long Island, bringing the total of victims found in the area to a staggering eight, officials announced Monday. “I’d like to report at this time we found human remains, three human remains so far, in the area between Oak Beach and Gilgo Beach,” said Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer at an afternoon news conference. “Certainly the Medical Examiner is going to be looking at the possibility that Shannon Gilbert is one of the remains.” The remains were discovered during the latest search for bodies in an ongoing, chilling case where authorities suspect a serial killer may be involved in the dumping of several bodies along Ocean Parkway which leads to popular vacation destination Jones Beach. Before Monday’s discovery, five bodies were uncovered in the area — four in Gilgo Beach in December 2010 and one about a mile away in Oak Beach last week. Authorities announced plans to close sections of Ocean Parkway Monday from 7 am to 7 pm to allow investigators and cadaver dogs to canvas the area for more evidence. Drivers are being urged to find alternate routes as they will not be able to access all westbound lanes on Ocean Parkway from the Nassau-Suffolk County border at Captree Bridge to Tobay Beach.
