Our Week Holiday In Cairns

Here’s a daily retelling of our recent holiday in Cairns Australia.

Monday

For the first day of our family adventure we thought we would get the blood flowing by going white water rafting on the Russell river in 2 man sports kayaks. Although the Russell River isn’t as hard as the Tully this is still a adrenaline ride. Because you are in 2 man sports rafts there is no guide with you. They are in their own kayak closeby.

Tuesday

Today we thought we might have a bit of a lay day. So the tribe went off in different directions.

Wednesday

On Wednesday we finally got to go to the Cairns Great Barrier Reef. We went to the reef with Great Adventures. They have a platform permanently anchored at the outer reef. The snorkelling was incredible with literally thousands of fish of all shapes and sizes surrounding you. The coral was fantastic and was so close you could even touch it.

That night we went out for a meal and a few drinks and watched some Cane Toad races. They are disgusting warty things.

Thursday

Today we went to Kuranda. It is a quaint little town in the rainforest behind Cairns. You can get a bus there, but we went on the Kuranda Skyrail. It took approximately forty five minutes with 2 stops on the route. Kuranda’s a interesting place but a little too tacky for my liking. Every second shop is selling boomerangs and the ones in between are selling souveneirs. A must do is the Kuranda Heritage Markets, with more Tshirts for sale as well as lots of local handmade arts and crafts, as well as more didgeridoo’s. We came back by the Kuranda Scenic Railway with more amazing views.

Friday

Friday was another relaxing day of sorts. We took the opportunity to visit the lagoon. For a destination with crocodiles and poisonous jellyfish, this place is the ultimate creation.

Friday night we visited the Cairns Night Zoo for dinner show. It was interesting, but it is aimed at visitors from other countries more than travellers. The food was OK.

Saturday

Today we visited the Great Barrier Reef again. Today we went with Ocean Quest on a scuba diving tour. Although we only did the snorkelling, as none of us are qualified divers. The reef was even better than the first day. The absence or crowds makes it a much better day out than on the big boat tours.

Sunday

For our last day we went to Cape Tribulation and the Daintree Rainforest . This is the worlds oldest rainforest, and it’s quite special. They say it’s “where the rainforest meets the reef” and thats what happens. The forest goes right down to the white sandy beaches.
