My parents want to bring me on vacation this summer, but we cant get on a plane because my mom absolutely hates planes.
Next weekend they want to bring me, and my brother to NH. to see the white mountains. I really don’t think I will have a good time. I don’t see the point in driving around for a weekend looking at trees.
My parents and I do not have a good relationship. We fight constantly and are considering going to family counseling because we disagree so much. I am the youngest in my family. I am 15 years younger than my brother (who is mentally disabled). He is 30.
I know there is no way to get out of this, but I know that spending a weekend away from my friends and fighting with my parents constantly isn’t going to be my idea of a vacation.
We are a family w/4 kids and a handicapped grandma…total of 7 ppl. How do i go about finding the best deals? any tips for finding internet bargains? should i hop around sites taking notes and just hope for the best or would it be better to hire a travel agent? (I’d rather not do that, unless it’s cheaper) Truthfully, i’d like to save as much money as possible since we are really stretching our budget just for the sake of some summer R&R, for us and the kids. On that note…does anyone know of any safe but cheap fun places for kids? any suggestions would be helpful and i thank u in advance…and just FYI…my husband is a graphic artist/muralist, and i am a stay-at-home-mom, hence the limited budget!
ps….we live in deep south texas. flights are too expensive (meaning i can’t afford it) and i have found most require flying to houston or dallas for connecting flights to popular destinations.
She’s five years old and has a rare neurological disorder that renders her unable to walk or properly control any of her motor functions. She is always in a wheelchair stroller when we’re out. She tends to scream when excited so it can’t be someplace that’s generally quiet. She has a slightly weak immune system so the beach is out of the question right now (since the whole oil spill thing’s going on). Her immune system’s not so weak that she can’t be around people at all, but it can’t be in a closed environment where there may be many sick people, especially sick kids. It also has to be someplace where we can take the whole family (well actually, it’s just 3 of us–the mother, 17 year old daughter, 5 year old daughter).
Any ideas?
Also, we’re willing to travel in a mini-van up to 5 or 6 hours from Philadelphia.
Oh, and the child has poor cognitive skills and has some symptoms of autism so she is not good with “in-your-face” places. She likes loud places though (with lots of chatter so she can scream without being shushed)
You don’t understand. The beaches around here have a very nauseating smell. I just went to slaughter beach last week to save horseshoe crabs and it reeked of oil. Why would I take a disabled child to that kind of environment? Furthermore, the beach water has been very polluted these days. That’s why I said her immune system can’t take it. And finally, would I take her to Atlantic city, where there’s nothing but gambling, drinking, and smoking?
Also, we don’t go on cruises because of how much they contribute to pollution…And I get seasick.
Enjoy this funny, offbeat story from the Traverse City Convention & Visitors Bureau about a reluctant teen who learns that her parents may actually be pretty smart when it comes to picking out a summer vacation destination. Produced by Petersen Productions of Traverse City. Big fun!
