Travellers with disabilities may need some form of assistance when making their journey, manoeuvring wheelchairs or lifting walking aids single-handed could prove too difficult. People have all kinds of disabilities, some are evident and others are less obvious. Blind and deaf travellers could need help as much as someone who is wheelchair bound and the public transport services are duty bound to make provision for them. There are a number of organizations that offer help and advice about disabled travel in Ireland and much information can be found on the web.
Travelling by rail is fast and relatively comfortable and the majority of able bodied people have no difficulty in boarding the trains. Those who have disabilities could find that they need assistance to get on and off and some may require a guide to take them to the right platform and help them aboard. If any of these statements apply to you then it would be wise to contact the train operator prior to making the journey.
If they are made aware of your needs then they can make provision for them but you should give the train operator at least two days notice and make your needs crystal clear. The majority of mainline stations have a designated member of staff who deals with this type of request. If the journey involves travelling on more than one train and the trains are run by different operators then arrangements for the entire journey should be dealt with at the station where you board the train. Buying a rail card will reduce the train fares for you and your companion.
People with disabilities often choose to go by bus and the majority of buses have ramps that allow wheelchair access. When safely on the bus then there should be some form of priority seating, if any further help is needed then do not hesitate to ask the driver or conductor. Disabled travel in Ireland can mean travelling for half fare, over the age of 65 travelling is free.
There are numerous taxi and minicab operators in the county and they are expected to carry hearing, guide or assistance dogs free of charge. The taxis should be able to carry wheelchair users although some private hire firms may not be able to offer this service. Public hire taxis are black and they carry a yellow plate, these cars can usually be found waiting on the taxi ranks.
There are many centres that offer help and advice on outdoor mobility, if you have any queries it will pay to make contact with them. These organizations can inform you of any concessionary fares that you may be entitled to and how and where to claim them. No transport option should be ruled out, disabled travel in Ireland is fine.

If you are disabled, there may be things that you cannot do. However, this does not have to keep you from enjoying yourself, in most cases. You may not get the chance to get out of the house very often, and it might be a good time to travel somewhere for some recreation, and a change of scenery. It is possible to take and enjoy a vacation despite disability issues. However, you may need to take some things into consideration. Here are some helpful tips that can make your special time, more enjoyable.
If you are planning to fly somewhere, it is best to check with the TSA or Travel Security Administration, to see what you can and cannot bring. This way you will not have any surprises, when you get to the airport. Also, you will not have to leave anything behind.
It may be best to book your flight over the phone. Make sure that you inform the airline of any and all of your disabilities. There are laws that provide for people that travel with disabilities, and you have certain rights.
It is always best to allow extra time, when flying. You might wish to add one hour to the recommended time for arriving. You might need extra time for the check in and screening processes.
Try to book flights that are nonstop, if possible. However, this is not always possible, so allow at least one and one half hours layover time. Your plane could be delayed, and you may need extra time to get to your connecting flight.
If you have a wheelchair, you can bring it with you. However, you will need to make special arrangements ahead of time. Also, make sure that your plane has restrooms that are accessible.
If you are planning a visit to an amusement park or public facility, contact them ahead of time. Most places have special arrangements for those with disabilities. In fact, you may be able to request disability guidelines, or download them from their website. This way, you can plan your trip and know what to expect.
Summary
It is possible to have fun on vacation despite disability problems. Plan ahead and make sure that you know what items you can bring with you. Be sure that the airline is aware of any special needs that you have, and try to book nonstop flights. You will need to make special arrangements to bring your own wheelchair. Remember to check into disability guidelines of public places that you intend to visit, also.

The Rules For Traveling With Disability
Posted: Nov 03, 2009 |
When planning to take a trip, by way of airplane, there are a number of different factors that you should consider. One of those factors includes whether or not you have a disability. Even if you do not have a disability, you also need to be prepared if you are traveling with someone else who has one. This preparation does not just include packing your bags for your trip, but it is also includes familiarizing yourself with air travel rules. Although most of the rules are the same, you will find that some rules differ for those who have a medical condition or a disability.
The first step in preparing for a trip with someone who is disabled, whether that person be yourself or another traveler, is to alert the airline. When making your reservation, you may want to inform the airline staff of any disability or medical condition that you may have. Although this is not necessary, it may be a good idea, especially if you will be traveling with medical equipment. Extra accommodations will need to be made for those who are traveling, past airport security checkpoints, with wheelchairs or mobility scooters. Learning what you will need to do with these items, ahead of time, is a great way to make your travel plans run as smoothly as possible.
It is also a good idea to famialrize yourself with the airport screening process. All individuals will need to go through medical detectors. If you or someone who you know is traveling with medical equipment that will set off the alarms, it is likely that they will be pulled aside for additional screening. This screening should only take a few minutes, but it will be done by a trained professional who will show compassion when dealing with those with a disability.
Unlike most other air travelers, who at this time are required to remove their shoes, those with a disability can leave their shoes on if they choose to do so. However, it is important to note that you may be subject to additional screening. To prevent this additional screening from occurring, you are advised to remove your shoes, if at all possible. In the event that you are unable to, it will not be a big ordeal. In fact, the additional screening often requires a quick swipe of a metal detector wand.
In addition to those with a disability, most airports have made special arrangements and exceptions for those who have a medical condition, especially one that requires medication at a specific time. You are allowed to keep your medication with you, in your carryon luggage, but you are advised to keep the dosages in small amounts. Due to the current ban on liquids, you are advised to have the proper medical identification. This means that you should keep your medication in the original package, especially if your name is on it. To be allowed through to the next checkpoint, your name will have to match the name of the prescription bottle. If it does not, there is a chance that you will have your medication confiscated.
By keeping the above mentioned points in mind you or your traveling partners, who may have a medical condition or a disability, should easily be able to make it to your intended destination. In the event that you are unsure about a particular screening procedure or if you have any other questions, you are advised to contact the airline in which you will be flying on or the airport that you will be leaving from, before your arrive there. Planning ahead is the best way to make your next flight a memorable and hassle-free experience.
