Johannesburg is a city in the Gauteng province in northeastern South Africa, roughly eighty kilometers north of Pretoria, the nation’s capital. This city is one of the forty largest civic areas in the entire world, and is the corporate mecca of Africa. Visitors from across the globe are drawn to its economic upside, not to mention its climate. Year-round sunshine and occasional summer storms are mainstays of the area.

History of Johannesburg
In 1886, George Harrison, an Australian Prospector, discovered the mineral wealth on the farmland known as Witwatersrand. Harrison sold his discovered claim for 10 pounds and this emerged as the introduction for the powerful “City of Gold”.

Things to see in Johannesburg

Apartheid Museum
When you go to the Apartheid Museum, you will be completely immersed in the alternate reality of black experience under Apartheid in South Africa. The evidence of repression and violence will be all around you, including a collection of the weapons police used to enforce “justice” in the townships, and an example of the intimidating “Kaspar”, the armored vehicle used by security forces. The reality that these items hint at is reinforced by huge photographs on all the walls, upsetting movies taken inside the townships, and metal cages where black prisoners were held, all of which illustrate the evils that the blacks endured under apartheid.

The Soweto Food Festival
Soweto offers a unique experience of food tasting and preparation, both local fair and international. A line of cultural cafes will show you what ingredients are used and what preparations are needed for various menus and the Chefs kitchen offers you a chance to sample the different kinds. The taste zone will show you current food trends from around the world and all this offers the unparalleled chance for cultural exchange via food.

To become familiar with South Africa’s finest beers, visitors are able to compare South African beers with their international counterparts at the Beer Garden. To experience the fine wines of South Africa, a wine route will educate tourists of their finest and most popular wines. While adults engage in beer and wine tasting, children can enjoy a wide range of activities in an area, which provides for their safety and pleasure.

Word’s deepest pub
While you travel underground in a worn out lift for 226 meters, you will find the donkey stables, which once upon a time housed the donkeys which were used to transport the gold filled rocks, from the worlds deepest and richest gold mines to the outer world. Now the stables have been transformed into a bar where tourists can go for a drink.

Gold Reef City
If you are interested in finding out how mining was done in the past you should visit Gold Reef City. The mine itself is located about 6 kilometers south of the city and you can see a demonstration on how the mine was operated in the old days. Gold Reef City has restaurants, shops and the Gold Reef City Hotel is located there. Gold and silver jewelry can be purchased at SA Mint as well. The town square also features live music from a 5-member band for your entertainment.

A hands-on science centre is a good place to test yourself on various machines and experiments. The brave tourists can go for 28 rides, which includes the tower of terror and the river rapids.

Johannesburg, which was a small mining town earlier, is now a vibrant capitalist city with highly qualitative cultural diversity. Thus the city is the right option for the tourist to engage with the South African vibe.

If you are touring to this beautiful city you will find it easy to get around with the attractive Johannesburg car rental deals available.
