Unfortunately the island was not built with disabled facilities in mind and you will find some badly surfaced footpaths and high kerb stones, having said that the facilities are much improved over the last ten years, especially with the lovely promenades in Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca - Costa Teguise's is only half complete at the moment making the surface of the area around Playa Las Cucharas difficult to access in a wheelchair, although the resort is fairly flat making it easier to wheel around. There are a couple of hire companies on the island offering a selection of electric and manual wheelchairs, walking and home aids and also carers if required. Take care when booking your accommodation, the standard bathrooms were generally fitted with a bath and shower over although the more modern builds include two bathrooms and one of these is normally a walk in shower although maybe not on the ground floor. Duplex style properties typically have their bedrooms upstairs and not all apartments have lifts in the complex so please check the details before you book.
