What’s a good birthday present to get for a mentally disabled 16yr old

Posted: June 6th, 2010 | Author: | Filed under: Camping | Tags: , , , , , , | 9 Comments »

I went to camp with her for a week and her parents gave out an open invitation to her bday party (which only 2/18kids were willing to go).

Any ideas?

I work with disabled children and to me, I would think of what they would want in general. Now i work with much younger so its a bit more simple. Just think what any 16 year old girl would want, then, if needed, adjust for her handicap. You showing up, and your caring probably means more then any gift to be real honest.

Just like anybody else I was trying to get a gift for, I would try to find out what some of her favorite things are first and just take it from there. If you know what someone likes, or what they are really wanting, it takes a lot of the guesswork out of it. But, it can be really fun just getting something you think is cool. too. Your being there to celebrate will definitely mean more than the gift, anyway. Have fun!!!

its really nice that you are going to her party, and i know she will appreciate your showing up very much!
all of these are very good answers! :)

i think a great gift would be a set of nice watercolors, and a watercolor pad. it’s a gift that pretty much anyone of any age could enjoy.

those are pretty inexpensive too, i think the paints are usually about 10 – 20 dollars at an art supply store, and the watercolor paper is only about 5 dollars.

i think a nintendo ds and some games for it would be a cool gift too. they’re easy to use and they make a lot of cool games for girls.
i’m not sure the exact cost of them, but probably inder 100 dollars.

Anything any 16 year old would want. You went to camp with her – what did she enjoy? Don’t think of her as mentally handicapped – think of her as a friend.

Do you know what her interests are? Maybe you could give her something related to her interests. If you don’t know her interests, just give her something that is popular among other 16 years old girls.

You coming to her birthday will probably mean a whole lot more to her than what gift you bring her.

    Have fun! :)

Maybe like most kids of that age…maybe a McDonald’s gift certificate, But you know her better then we do..But as said you coming to her party would mean the most….and give her a big hug…That also mean a lot…

trick is to find something as age appropriate as possible while taking into consideration her interests and abilities–

    does she like music?

how about something (CD/DVD/TSHIRTHannah Montana or High School Musical (if she doesn’t already have it..

    or a piece of jewelry

these things are age appropriate, but do not need 16 year old skills to use

As a Youth & disability support worker who has been to many teenage parties, where the person has a developmental/cognitive or physical impairment. I would always start at age appropriate gifts.

Ask her parents what she likes and dislikes, try to find out what her favourite colours, or music etc are, this can save embarrassment, of buying the wrong gift.

Age appropriate gifts could be things like
CD’s as a few people have suggested
DVD’s of her favourite movie, such as Harry potter (preferably not children ones, such as the wriggles)
Jewelery, such as necklace, bangle/bracelet or watch
Jewelery box, with her name engraved on a small plate.
Makeup or perfume (most of the young woman, I work with love being able to apply makeup and perfume)
Gift vouchers for clothing, music, stores etc
Cinema/movie vouchers (these usually go down really well)
Facial or manicure (dependent on how tactile she is, if hates people touching her, then this is not a good gift idea)
Gift basket of soaps/shower gels, talcs, body lotion, bath bombs, perfumed body sprays etc
Photo album or a photo frame
Computer games, if she has access to a computer
Craft box/basket, of crayons, colouring pencils, blank books, stickers, cards etc.
Something for her room, such as a bed throw/spread, poster, pretty mat, stuffed toy (beanie bears are fantastic and not childish)
    Pretty hat or scarf

Good luck and hope your gift is well recieved
